Superior Side-item Packaging

The recent menu explosion in side items (breadsticks, chicken wings, poppers, etc.) ushers in the need for economical, efficient, crush-resistant side-item packaging — in short, a better box for breadsticks! Sadly, what many companies have been using for packaging side items in the last 10 years has been an embarrassment to the pizza industry. So here's a few new ideas.

Example
Side-item Carton
This example of an economical, fast-folding, crush-resistant folder-style side-item box concept was designed by Correll Concepts LP for a high-quality Canadian franchise firm.

Correll Concepts creates packaging concepts, but does not manufacture boxes. (If you're looking for a box manufacturer reference, send us an email.) We deal in innovative designs that your current box-maker can produce. Our design library includes a variety of innovative side-item carton concepts in both the folder and clamshell formats. (For details on box types and structures, see Structural Options — Pros & Cons.) These concepts involve both innovative structure and innovative graphics.

Which concept is best for your operation? Here's some helpful info. Clamshell boxes have the advantage of requiring no folding, while folder-style boxes save 30 percent or more in cost and also provide superior stacking strength and secure cover closure during delivery. Interestingly, it's now possible to have a cost-effective folder-style box that requires virtually no folding time at all by using Correll Concepts Insta-fold™ technology.

Many of these carton concepts contain exciting, unique features and designs. For example, some are equipped with a separate compartment for sauce cups, as required by some health departments (see examples 2, 3, and 4 below).

All of our concepts feature paperboard construction as opposed to plastic or styrofoam, thereby eliminating condensation build-up and product sogging in transit. We create mainly in corrugated board (a.k.a. “cardboard”), SBS, and chipboard.

Side-item packaging can also play a big role in public perception and sales-building. For insight into how and why, see Creating a Sales-building A-bomb.
